Hampshire
Industrial Archaeology Society ("HIAS")
studies all aspects of industrial history and archaeology,
with special reference to the Hampshire area. It was founded in 1968 as the Southampton University Industrial
Archaeology Group (SUIAG) but the name was later changed to reflect the Society's county
wide interest.
Our main activities centre
on our monthly meetings that
feature talks on a wide range of topics usually
by visiting speakers. We also issue a number of publications
and organise occasional visits to places of I.A interest.
In the past, the Society was involved
in surveys and restoration and preservation (see
Projects), often in association
with other organizations such as the Hampshire Mills
Group, The Twyford Waterworks Trust and
the Southampton Tram Project, some of which had their origins in the Society and whose
members are also often members of the Society. We
are affiliated to
The Association of Industrial Archaeology, the Council for British Archaeology,
Southampton Heritage Federation and the South-East Region Industrial
Archaeology Conference.
Membership
of the Society gives free entrance to all our meetings
(occasional visitors are also welcome to attend
them at no charge) and access to our extensive library
of books and DVDs on industrial archaeology. The membership fee also
includes subscriptions to the HIAS
Journal and the half yearly newsletter Focus
and the chance
to take part in visits that the Society
organises.
If
you are interested in learning more about us then
please come to one of our

which are held at the Underhill Centre, St John's
Road, Hedge End, SO30 4AF.

Gift Aid: As with most
charities, HIAS can recover tax paid on
subscriptions from the Government. All you have to
do is to make a declaration, confirming that you pay
income tax. It is so simple and it does not cost you
anything, but it means that HIAS can reclaim money
from the Government. You
only have to make the declaration once, and you can
cancel it at any time. (If you have a joint
subscription, only one of you should sign the
declaration.)
If
you want to join then please print
off and send the membership form and
payment to the membership secretary:-
Keith Andrews, 13 Ashley Close, Harestock, Winchester,
SO22 6LR. Tel: (01962) 880917
HIAS is
a registered charity, No. 276898.
